Abstract
In contrast to the previous year, the good and well-distributed rainfall from march to the end of the year was favorable for continuous growth of grasses from March 1951,until the middle of February, 1952.Most species under observation in the grass plots responded well to these conditions;particularly worthy of note in this respect were a perennial Dolichos species ex Kilima Kiu alone and in combination with Elephant grass;Panicum maximum var. trichoglume,an imported strain grown from seed;a lawn grass known as Madi River grass (Cynodon species). Both the hairless and hairy types of Elephant grass on the estate produced flowering heads during August-an unusual occurrence for the hairy type.Plants of both types have been raised from seed.
