Abstract
It has been claimed with some justification that agricultural research is carried out under conditions which are more variable than in any other field of scientific investigation. In order to assess with accuracy the response to a treatment or series of treatments the investigator attempts to find the most uniform material and circumstances which are available. It is an unfortunate fact that uniform material and conditions are extremely rare in agricultural crops, and coffee is no exception. In any block unseen differences exist in soil fertility and moisture, genetic composition of the plants,in the effects of wind, slope and aspect, and many other factors may exert a variable influence on segments of the prospective experimental area. By the very nature of agriculture the sources of variation other than those under investigation can be only controlled in part.
