Abstract
Fungicides have been used in agriculture since about 1840 when the first fungicide, a mixture of lime and "bluestone" (copper sulphate), was applied to vines in France. It is interesting to note that this mixture was not applied to control any fungal pathogen of grapes, but to stop people stealing the fruit! However, the owner of this vineyard,a M. Millardet, noticed that the mixture also had the suprising effect of controlling certain diseases of grapes. He had the mixture applied, by paintbrush, to infected plants all over his vineyard with quite spectacular results.Other people took up his idea and Bordeaux mixture was born.Since that time, the same mixture has been applied to a wide variety of crops, saving many farmers many millions of pounds.
