Abstract
In areas of Tanganyika characterized by a single rainfall regime it has long been apparent from general observation that crops planted early in the season give the best yields. This is sometimes referred to as the date of planting effect. With most crops, however, this is misleading terminology since the important point is date of sowing in relation to the onset of the rains. It is therefore more realistic to refer to the effect as due to time of planting.
