The overall aim of storage trials in Tanzania at present is to find an improved method of domestic storage acceptable to the farmer. Storage bins have been constructed in Tanzania of various materials in the past. These have never had any lasting success, it is not clear from reports why this is so, but it may have been due to the bins being too large for most farmers to construct easily. Corrugated iron as a small capacity silo does not appear to have been tried previously, and when a one-ton silo of cheap and simple construction, which was reported to be used successfully in Ethiopia, was read about plans were, immediately obtained from Dr. Wesley Hobbs, the designer of this model, at Haile Selassie I University, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
