Abstract
Tanganyika has a pressure of population less than that of other East African Territories, and possesses larger areas of fertile empty land. The population tends, nevertheless, to concentrate in favourable areas, where it exceeds the carrying capacity of the land. The great distances between the administrative centres and the very large districts covered by officers of both technical and administrative services have caused progress in soil conservation to be dangerously slow in many of these over-cultivated areas.
