Abstract
An accurate description of the soil and atmospheric environment is an essential pre-requisite for good agricultural research. Agro-climatological information also helps in the pre-selection of alternative crop varieties, livestock breeds and farming practices that are likely to be successful in a given environment, thus saving valuable resources in avoiding unnecessary experimental trials. Agro-meteorological data are also invaluable in predicting outbreaks of plant diseases and pests and in design of various control measures. It is for these reasons that agro-meteorological information should be recorded carefully at all major agricultural research stations and experimental sites wherever possible.
