Abstract
The proposals have been worked out in close co-operation with the Department for Physical Planning, Nairobi. The most important centres as well as the majority of service centres, are located on the higher slopes of Mt. Kenya from the boundary of Embu District to Meru Forest and in Tigania and Igembe Divisions. These parts are the most densely populated and fertile areas of the District. The western part of the District from Meru Forest to Nanyuki is sparsely populated owing to the special mark of large scale farming. The development within the service centres in many cases seems to have taken place more or less haphazardly. The Department for Physical Planning is at the moment (April, '73) working on a new Development Plan for Meru Township. It is of great importance to have proper master plans drawn up for all urban and rural centres of the District.
