Abstract
Extensive studies have been conducted in recent years on the effectiveness of rainfall and much valuable information has been accumulated. An aspect of this problem which is of particular importance in the tropics is that of rainfall intensity, and investigations on the high intensity storms characteristic of tropical climates have always been handicapped by the unsuitability or high cost of recording instruments. Estimates of rainfall intensity are of increasing importance with the need for greater production in tropical agriculture, leading on the one hand to pressure on the land with its attendant dangers {)f soil deterioration and erosion, and on the other to the introduction of mechanization, with increasing exposure to both sun and rain.
