Abstract
Rainfall is the main restricting factor to crop cultivation in Tana River district of Coast Province The area is used mainly for extensive livestock grazing Traditionally crop cultivation is restricted to the narrow river in: strip along the Tana River, which is flooded, usually twice a year Now, there is an increasing demand from the local population for small irrigation schemes. This kind of development was started by the sedentary (Pokomo) people themselves with the help from churches and the District Development Committee. The present state of the four existing schemes in the Garsen region is very poor and further irrigation development requires an overall and comprehensive approach through governmental intervention.
