Abstract
The National Fibre Research Centre (KARI-Mwea) at Mwea-Tebere is located in Mwea Division, Kirinyaga District, Central Province, Kenya. The Centre lies 21 km South West of Embu town and about 112 km North East of Nairobi. It lies on latitude 0° 37' S and longitude 37° 20' E at an elevation of 1159 m above sea level. The average rainfall is about 850 mID with a range of 500-1250 mID divided into two rainfall peaks. The long rain starts from mid-March to June with an average of 450 mID, while the short rains start in mid-October to December with an average of 350 mID. The rainfall is characterised by uneven distribution in total amounts in time and space. The temperature range from 15.6 to 28.6 DC with a mean of about 22 DC.
