Abstract
Fishery research is the study of fish in relation to their environment; little can be learnt about them until we have a fair knowledge of the conditions in which they live. The need for this knowledge is made very obvious to the biologist working on inland fisheries. For example, the same species of fish occur in a number of East African lakes, in some they grow to a considerable size, weighing several pounds, while in others they never exceed a few ounces in weight. No explanation of these facts is likely to arise from investigations confined solely to the study of the fish themselves.
