Abstract
Since the early stages of their formulation, the principles, concepts and procedures of the framework for land evaluation (Brinkman and Smyth, 1972; FAO, 1976) have been observed and used for evaluating land in Kenya. The principles and concepts have been closely adhered to during the evaluation. However, the procedures and methods may have been adapted to suit the local conditions. FAO (1983) published the Guidelines; land evaluation for rainfed agriculture - an expansion of the basic concepts of the 'framework' giving the procedures and methods necessary for evaluating land for rainfed agriculture. The 'guidelines' have not been rigorously applied in Kenya, therefore, only a critical comparison between the Kenyan adaptations and the guidelines' methodologies is presented here.
