Abstract
Zebu steers digested about 3 per cent more of the organic matter of low quality grass hay than did grade Hereford steers. Estimates of the rate of fermentation of the rumen contents taken during these digestibility trials showed that Zebus also had higher fermentation rates. It is suggested that greater saliva production by the Zebus could account for these differences. The estimates of retention time appeared unreliable. Correlations were not apparent between rate, time and amount of digestion as determined.
