Abstract
The research programme of the Plant Pathology Division at E.A.A.F.R.O. is directed principally towards surveys of virus diseases of East African main food crops, with particular reference to the legumes. The characterization, by morphology and serology, of virus isolates causing widespread disease in the field, and their subsequent critical identification, is a fundamental aspect of the programme. The ultimate object of the E.A.A.F.R.O. survey remains the formulation, where possible, of recommendations leading to practical methods of avoiding losses and obtaining control. In many instances, this will be dependent upon identification of the particular virus strain or serotype involved.
