Abstract
During 3 years of pertussis surveillance between April 1974 and March 1977 among a rural highland population of 24,000 in Kenya 953 cases have been observed with a peak of 218 cases in December 1974 - January 1975. The diagnosis of pertussis was verified according to standardized procedures and was, whenever possible, supported by isolation of Bordetella pertussis, antibody level determination and a total and differential white blood cell count was made.
