Abstract
Twelve hays were fed to adult steers at or near maintenance and three fresh fodders to heifers during earlier investigations into the digestibilities of these fodders. The material fed and faeces voided were analysed for calcium. Endogenous losses were calculated on the basis of recently published data and were used with intake of calcium determined in the above trials to calculate percentage availability and mean daily losses or gains. No relationship with available data was found for calcium availability but from the data obtained it would seem that adult steers at maintenance require a calcium content in their diet of above 0.2 per cent to avoid a negative calcium balance.
