Abstract
For a long time, the research agenda has focused on the development of improved technologies for increased agricultural production. However, rapid growth in population in the country has resulted in increased competition for limited resources leading to the overexploitation of the land resource base. The effects of this overexploitation are apparent in the diminishing biodiversity, increased levels of soil erosion and the declining soil fertility and overall productivity. The research scientists are now faced with the serious challenge of not only having to develop technologies that will enhance agricultural productivity but which will also ensure sustainable management of the resources.
