Abstract
The accurate measurement of runoff from the trial catchments set a considerable problem. They are subject to violent flashfloods of brief duration which carry a large amount of sediment, both in suspension and as bed-load, and which cause continual changes to the stream-beds and banks. The natural sections of the channels are therefore completely unstable and it was consequently essential first to install permanent control structures at the discharge measuring stations.
