Abstract
Information on the properties of soils (pbr soil mapping unit) in the akaunati area relevant to irrigation and drainage was collected. Deep auguring revealed two different horizon sequences. In the Western part of the Kunati area (basalt) occurs at a depth of usually more than 2.0m depth. In the Eastern part Murram is often found at the depth of 1.5 drainage problems are likely to arise upon the introduction of irrigation. The ground water table however, could be controlled rather easily. Costs involved in drainage will be less in the Western part due to deeper sub-stratum.
