Abstract
Erosion has been described as the modern symptom of ma1adjustment between human society and its environment, and a warning that nature is revolting against the sudden incursion of an exotic civilization into her ordered domah (10). This description is apt for the tropics where attempts to replace shifting cultivation and the accompanying bush fallow with a more permanent form of agriculture have usually imposed upon the tropical farmers' land preparation techniques detrimental to the structurally unstable soils often found in the tropics (14).
