Abstract
It is many years since widespread and severe attacks by the Coffee Thrips were seen in the main coffee growing areas. Serious damage, confined to a few acres, still occurs in most years however.Planters are advised to keep a close check during the next two months especially on those parts of a plantation which have a history of thrips attack.Plate 32 of the "Atlas of Coffee Pests and Diseases" illustrates thrips damage and a thrips nymph as it might appear under a hand lens. The winged adult is a little larger than the nymph and darker in colour.Thrips attack usually reaches a peak in March tailing off as the Long Rains bring colder weather. The average number of thrips per leaf which justifies spraying varies roughly between one and six according to circumstances.
