Abstract
In the annual reports of the Central Artificial Insemination Service of Kenya of 1969 and 1970, a conception rate following first insemination of 40 to 50 per cent is mentioned. In seven herds of all main dairy breeds and crosses on Kenya Research Stations, the average interval between two consecutive inseminations was 47.2 days (883 intervals in the case of 1970). In the same herds, the mean of the calving intervals, ending in 1970, was 448.6 days (178 intervals; Smit, 1971). This is an unsatisfactory situation '3Jud many factors contribute to it including management and nutrition. A particular aspect of reproductive performance is the successful detection of heat.
