Abstract
Low rate of survival and high frequency of yellow plants had often been experienced in the large scale Ruvu Afforestation Project's nursery as well as in the adjacent research nursery belonging to Tanzania Silviculture Research Section, when raising seedlings of Pinus caribaea and of other conifers. One of the suspected factors causing the difficulties was the potting medium applied. A series of experiments with different types of soils and of soil mixtures were consequently carried out by the EAC/NORAD Lowland Afforestation Project. The results from six soil experiments are hereby presented.
