Abstract
One of the difficulties in growing a perennial crop is that yield and quality are influenced, not only by the current season's conditions but also very much by what has happened previously. All farming operations have, therefore to be assessed in terms of their future effects on the plant. For the above-ground parts the benefits or otherwise of particular management practices are often readily seen, but the effects on root growth are not nearly so apparent. Some obvious conditions which can be detrimental to root growth are over-cropping, too severe pruning and loss of leaf due to rust or leaf miner.
