Abstract
This research was performed over 10 months as part of a Master of Biotechnology (Plant Biotechnology). In accordance with the requirements of the program, the research is presented in the format of a manuscript for submission to a peer-reviewed scientific journal. I have chosen to follow the format of the Environmental Microbiology Journal. My co-authors for the manuscript are AlProf Rachel Burton, Dr Matthew Tucker, Dr Barbara Williams, and Dr Deirdre Mikkelsen. Dr Barbara Williams and Dr Deirdre Mikkelsen designed the in vitro batch fermentation process that I used and assisted with data analysis and interpretation of results. AlProf Rachel Burton and Dr Matthew Tucker assisted in the design and validation of Ion Torrent primers. AlProf Rachel Burton and Dr Matthew Tucker suggested the project, supervised my research and reviewed drafts of the manuscript.
