Abstract
The extent and average values of spiral grain are described for 231 Cupressus spp. (2.12°), 235 Pinus pantia (3.33°) and 157 Pinus radiata (3.67°) from sites all over East Africa. It is not a serious defect and breeding work is unlikely to improve it much. The variation of spiral grain just inside the bark, around and up trees is described, and estimates of numbers of readings per tree for given precisions are shown. The variation from bark to pith is also shown,
