Abstract
Weed science is a plant protection discipline concented with weeds and their control. Weeds must be controlled in order to grow crops economically. In the tropics, where conditions of high temperature and humidity favour fast weed growth, crop loss is very high. In Africa, it is estimated that weeds cause average crop losses of 30 percent or more (Terry and Michieka, 1987). Weeds are the most underestimated serious crop pests in the tropics, yet in no other' part of the world do weeds cause so much yield reduction and so much human suffering as in the tropics, where farmers spend more time weeding than any other farming activity (Akobundu, 1987).
