Abstract
Manda', or 'umanda', is a name given by people of the Wanyamwezi tribe to a local soil. This soil is intermediate in appearance between black cotton soil, characteristic of the seasonally flooded, open drainage-line areas known as 'mbuga', and the red or grey soils found on the surrounding hills. It is apparently closer to the former, but when dry does not show the deep cracks typical of the mbuga soil.
