Abstract
This paper discusses the contribution of livestock to food security among agropastoral households in a semi-arid rural setting. Livestock keeping has multi-faceted functions. It enhances crop production by encouraging greater pieces ofland to be cultivated. It improves the fertility of the land through application of manure from livestock, thereby enabling higher yields to be obtained. During the dry season, livestock are sold or exchanged for grain. Households with livestock better manage the risk of livelihood collapse and cope more easily during extreme dry weather conditions.
