Abstract
In nature, biological fixation of atmospheric nitrogen is widespread among the prokaryotes. This process is catalysed by the enzyme nitrogenase. In contrast, no good evidence exists to support nitrogen fixation by eukaryotes (see Dalton, 1974). There has been much interest in the study of free-living nitrogen-fixing microorganismS: (Mulder, 1975). The role of the process of fixation in global food production has been reviewed by Stewart (1975), Rao (1976) and Dobereiner (1977).
