Abstract
The Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARl) is a parastatal organization, established by the Science and Technology Act Cap. 250 of 1979 with a mandate for conducting livestock, crop and factor research programmes in support of further development of the agricultural sector in Kenya. The Institute currently manages nearly three dozens of research centres and sub centres spread out nation-wide. Each of these centres has specific mandate which may be national, regional or both. The national research centres are commodity or factor based and are charged with the responsibility of generating technology which has relevance to broad sections of the country and/or production programmes. The regional research centres are mandated to carry out research targeted to the circumstances of a specified agro-ecological zone. The development of technologies relevant to the mandate area incorporates conditions from the extension officers, the farmers and other relevant development agencies.
