Abstract
Soil analysis alone is not always a satisfactory guide to fertilizer recommendations, yet roots may extract nutrients from the soil in amounts comparable to certain chemical soil extractants. Because a relationship exists between some of the extractable nutrient ions in the soil and their uptake by plants, soil analysis is a valuable diagnostic tool. This is particularly true of soil analysis when used to assess the initial fertility status of soil. A soil test will reveal whether or not there is an optimum balance between the basis nutrient cations (K, Ca, Mg), or whether other soil nutrient elements are adequate for normal plant growth.
