Abstract
Reconnaissance soil surveys or the mapping of soil and land characteristics at scale 1:100.000 or smaller, are normally carried out to serve multi-purpose land use pl8.nning. They therefore are always followed by a land evaluation. The procedure of land evaluation (or "land classification , "land suitability classification") involves the assessment of essential land characteristics to Provide ratings of relative suitability of the land for physically possible and socially end economically promising forms of use. These relevant forms of land use, here called "land utilization types" (also known as 1Iland use alternatives or "development alternatives"), should be identified and defined as e2.rly as possible, preferably before or in the early stages of the soil survey. In that way the soil surveyor will be guided in the choice of the range of lend Characteristics that will have to be mapped.
