Abstract
Production constraints were identified using the participatory Learning and Action Research (PLAR) model. The PLAR was carried out in three National Agriculture and Livestock Extension Programme (NALEP) focal areas. These focal areas were at Mukanduini, central division, Kirinyaga district; Kiramba, Kandara division, Maragwa district; and at Kianjogu, Githunguri division, Kiambu district. The PLAR was conducted by a team of facilitators, comprising KARl, Ministry of Agriculture staff Tools used included introductory village meeting, focal area maps, transects, organization diagrams, wealth ranking, soil diversity and farm stratification, resource flow models, and closing village meeting. The team facilitators were divided into five subgroups, mainly, socio-economics, crops, livestock, land use, soils, and agroforestry.
