Abstract
The National Horticultural Research Centre is located in Murang'a District of Central Province with centre co-ordinates 0° South and 37 41 East. The centre is 43km north of Nairobi. The elevation of the centre is 1548m above mean sea level and experiences bimodal pattern of rainfall with an annual mean of 1,000mm p.a. Long rains occur between March and May while short rains are between October and December. The mean annual maximum and minimum temperatures are 25.1 and 13.r>C respectively. The centre falls under agro-ecological zone 3 (UM3). The soils of the area are nitosols, acrisols, gleysols, combisols, histosols and lithosols and they are all low in both nitrogen And phosphorus.
