Abstract
The Dutch East India Company were the pioneers who first brought coffee to Europe.Their source of supply was Java, part of the Dutch Empire. It is said that a cutting from a coffee tree in the Amsterdam botanic gardens was stolen and taken to Paris, and there,in the botanic gardens,it grew into a vigorous tree.In 1720 a slip from it was taken to Martinique and from this all the immense plantations of the West Indies and Central and South America, except the Dutch West Indies, are said to have developed. The Dutch West Indies were supplied with slips from Amsterdam.
