Abstract
Trials were undertaken at Gategi in Mbeere District to enable farmers to benefit from the results of previous research work, which had shown increased crop yields on vertisols were possible through the creation of drainage channels to reduce waterlogging on almost flat areas prone to flooding. Early planting prior to the rains on both flat and gently sloping areas also gave increased yield. Farmers, however, were unable to benefit from these results due to the unsuitability of the current range of ox drawn equipment.
