Abstract
The livestock sector is the most important source of national livelihoods and foreign currency in Somaliland. Taxes and port charges on exported animals at the port of Berbera represent a major source of revenue both for the central government and the Berbera municipality. To develop and maintain the livestock sector as the top foreign currency earner requires that veterinary services in Somaliland have to undergo changes to meet the needs of international trade in animals and their products. However, since the beginning of the internal conflicts in the 1980s the veterinary services in the country have disintegrated. There is an urgent need to rehabilitate these services if the livelihoods of the Somaliland nationals are to be improved.
