Abstract
As regards the semi-arid at least, tree growth is so slow that It plays little part in regeneration of the soil. It would be an advantage to find a quick-growing tree for these areas, providing that the area is free from tsetse fly. However, grass-fallow is the most likely method of regenerating soil structure and fertility in the drier areas and the method of pre-cuItivation which is being tried in the Southern Highlands of Tanganyika may show sufficient promise to be worthy of consideration.
