Abstract
The domestic goat has been rather neglected by climate physiologists and there is little documentation on the effects of heat l03.d on goats in the tropics (Devendra and Burns, 1970; French, 1970). The object of this experiment was to examine some indices of response to heat load by the Zambian goat and to consider the effects of a possible heat stress caused by exposure to solar radiation. The experiment is part of a general study aimed at describing and evaluating the Zambian goat. Since it is a general belief that this animal is well adapted to its environment, the study has been concentrated on factors thought to be of possible importance in this adaptation. The heat tolerance of the animal, in particular its ability to cope with the heat load imposed by exposure to solar radiation, is one such factor.
