Abstract
Every now and then a red calf is born into a herd of pedigree Friesian or Aberdeen Angus cattle. Breeders who do not know about the inheritance of red and black coat colour must be somewhat puzzled as to why some black cattle produce only black calves, whereas others occasionally produce a red one. The usual explanation is that "'e's related to that old bun 'Wot used er throw red uns" but, apart from the fact that they have to be knocked on the head rather early in life, which may be a nuisance, no-one is really unduly worried about the appearance of a few red calves now and again.
