Abstract
This issue of the Highlighter, the first in 2005, stands out as a summary of activities in the eventful 2004. The Biotechnology Centre was a beehive of activity, hosting His Excellency President Kibaki during the official opening of it's laboratories at Kabete and thereafter the AS ARECA Board and the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture and Environment. The official opening and visits went an extra mile to demystify Biotechnology, which is often mistaken to be genetic engineering/modification of plant and animal tissue, a practice believed to unleash lethal longterm effects on consumers of agricultural produce. The institute also hosted Dr. Jacques Diouf, FAO Director General and later His Excellency Sam Nujoma, the outgoing Namibian President.
