Abstract
Agriculture, including both crop and livestock production, is the largest sector of the economy. According to official figures it accounts for about 27.3% of national income. However, this is probably an under-estimate given the widespread production for subsistence which does not appear in the 'monetary economy'. Kenya is largely selfsufficient for all major food commodities except wheat In addition the agricultural sector contributes over 50% by value of all exports. The recent decline in the performance of this sector has had an adverse impact on the whole economy.
