Abstract
The long-term field trial at NARL Kabete continued into its 29th year. The experiment was set up in 1976 to investigate the effect of continuous cropping on soil chemical properties and crop yields (maize and beans) using various combinations of farmyard manure, crop residues and inorganic fertilizers (in particular nitrogen and phosphorus). The soil type, Nitisol, represents an important agricultural zone in Kenya i.e., the Central Kenya and Kisii regions covering a total of about 55,000 ha of land in Kenya and about 228,000 km-2 within the E. African highlands. Agricultural management may influence nutrient availability and conservation or loss hence the need for appropriate interventions to reduce the risk of land degradation under intensive cropping.
