Abstract
Writing a chapter on evaporation in lecture notes (Stigter, 1976a) it was found that some excellent work had been done on calculation of open water evaporation in East Africa but that also some misconceptions appeared in East African and related literature on evaporation calculations. As at that time the Directorate of Meteorology in Dar es Salaam showed interest in the 'Subject and as at the same time it became more and more internationally accepted that in irrigation studies another standard should be used, refereed to as potential or reference crop evaporation, we -decided to review the East African and some other pertinent literature and to propose the more recent approach for our conditions (Stigter, 1977;Stigter and Kisamo, 1978). In separate papers we dealt with the pressure (height) dependence of the wind functions and an error occurring in relation to this in the evaporation formulaeused in East Africa (Stigter, 1976b; 1978).
