Abstract
The control achieved with insecticides against "biting ants" Macromischoides aculeatus Mayr. (Formicidae), on Robusta coffee (Cuffe a callephora) was determined. The insecticides tested were lindane, dieldrin, malathion and endrin emulsifiable concentrates and lindane and dieldrin dusts. The most promising treatments were:- (i) Two applications of dieldrin 18 per cent emulsifiable concentrate, using 2.5 pin!> of the concentrate per acre for each application, giving 68 per cent control. (ii) Two applications of dieldrin 2.5 per cent dust, using 20-25 lb. per acre for each application, giving 69 per cent control. (iii) Two applications of malathion 50 per cent emulsifiable concentrate, using 2.5 pints of the concentrate per acre for each application, giving 56 per cent control. There was evidence that the application of lindane insecticides to Robusta trees can cause taints in the final clean coffee.
