Abstract
Crop production in coastal lowlands of Kenya is faced with a number of challenges. Among these challenges, drought has been identified as one of the major constraints to be addressed if yields at farm level are to improve. Maize is the most important staple food in Coastal Kenya but yields are often low due to drought that often sets in just when the crop is about to flower. Since irrigation for the entire region is not feasible, it is important that maize varieties that are drought-tolerant are made available to farmers in order for them to realize a crop even in times of droughts. The research undertaken aimed at developing these maize varieties.
