Abstract
Although the operational mandate of Irrigation and Drainage Branch embraces both irrigation and drainage planning and development; the Branches’ activities during the past 17 years has largely concentrated on irrigation. The branch is, however, keen to redress the imbalance in its future development programmes. As a first step, the branch in early 1991 formed a Drainage Management Team (DMT) comprised of a technical advisor and a management advisor who are non-IDS staff and a co-ordinator who is an IDB staff. The DMT was formed with 3 major aims viz assessing drainage requirements and priorities, drawing a drainage development plan that can be implemented over the next 5-10 years and to define appropriate approaches and guidelines for planning and implementing smallholder drainage projects.
