Abstract
Rinderpest is a potentially devastating viral disease of mainly cattle and some species of wildlife. The disease has engaged substantial global resources totaling in excess of US$200 million over the last four decades in attempts to eradicate it. These efforts have significantly reduced the disease incidence but three foci of endemic disease remain as obstacles to the final global eradication. Infra-structural in-accessibility, difficulties in the logistics of vaccine production and delivery and the presence of wildlife present challenges to the eradication programmes. The double recombinant vaccinia virus vaccine for rinderpest has features that offer prospects for the global eradication of rinderpest through its use in cattle and wildlife.
